With a goal of helping our local community, students at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute and Grand River Collegiate Institute participated in the Annual Turkey Bowl Food Drive. The Turkey Bowl is a friendly competition that encourages students to donate food towards our local Food Bank Of Waterloo Region. From October 6 to 9, non-perishable food items such as jars of peanut butter and jelly, canned tuna, preserved proteins and pastas were collected.
According to the United Nations, more than 2.3 billion people worldwide experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2024. In a recent study from the University of Toronto, approximately 25.5% of people across the ten provinces experienced food insecurity, a number that continues to rise year after year.
Cameron Heights students had the chance to win a pizza party for their first-period class based on the success of their donations. Each day, certain items corresponded to different points, which were tallied at the end of each day. In total, more than 4,000 meals were collected! Thank you to Laura Quinney, Heather Millard and Graham Moogk-Soulis, who ran the event at their respective schools.
A highlight of Turkey Bowl includes sports games held at each school. Students were encouraged to cheer for their teams!
Turkey Bowl is a great event that demonstrates the ability of students to collaborate with one another while working towards a common goal. Using school spirit and pride, we were able to make an impact addressing food insecurity and learn about the importance of being involved citizens.
The students here at Cameron Heights and Grand River were passionate about this event. Through the friendly rivalry, students got to enjoy the process and festivities leading up to Thanksgiving. We can’t wait to get involved again next year!
