Dear Cameron Heights (CHCI) Families,
The number of individuals currently experiencing homelessness in the Waterloo Region is unprecedented. In response to urgent needs, the Region of Waterloo will be opening an emergency shelter at 104 Stirling Avenue South, in the former Edith MacIntosh Child Care Centre in Kitchener. This site will house between 26 to 30 individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
The site will begin operating on Thursday, November 30, 2023, and will be operated by a new service provider, Services and Housing in the Province (SHIP). The site will offer overnight shelter spaces and users will be able to access housing support services at the site during the day.
We are working with the Region of Waterloo and SHIP to ensure our school communities are informed and we will continue to follow typical practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
