Live music requires a lot of coordination, preparation and practice in order to put on a great show. In December, Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute hosted a Winter Concert featuring many ensembles playing winter pieces and animated movie hits. They mixed together some funky jazz and even sang some tear-jerking songs!

Behind the polished final product was a lot of tireless work was put in by the Cameron Heights Music Department leaders!

Music is best when arranged in a group setting. Sure, solos are nice, but you miss out on harmonies and the pros of making music in a group. The same can be said for planning events. The evening is run by the Cameron Music Council, a group of more than 50 students who contribute to the concert’s success, as well as various other musical events throughout the year.

When asked about the key takeaways from the concert, one member said:  “The responsibility of organizing such an event provided me with valuable experience and developed their leadership abilities. The concert showed me how far I had come since the start of the year, showing what difficult pieces can be conquered in even a semester.”

Another student found it “enlightening to see the reactions of newer music participants” who had not been exposed to the department before. Seeing the students who had only started music in Grade 9 helped them to feel the impact of music on everyone who plays and participates.

Staff were also happy to support and mentor the musicians. They expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments and look forward to more learning throughout the Spring semester.
