Looking for a fun way to explore the outdoors, enjoy the spring weather and connect with nature, all while practicing physical distancing?
From Monday, May 25 to Friday, May 29, our outdoor education department is hosting a Backyard Bug Blitz for all WRDSB students and families. Yes, bugs! Counting bugs may not be as familiar as counting birds and may sound a little scary, but there are many good reasons to tally the invertebrates that live near you. Bugs play a vital role in the functioning of our ecosystems, like waste removal and pollination services. Having our students and families identify the bugs in our region will help tell us more about the distribution of these creatures in our area.
This activity can be done from a backyard, front yard, balcony, porch or window. With a few simple resources, everyone can enjoy a bit of nature and learn about our region’s beautiful bugs.
Just like our Backyard Bird Count last month, this is free, fun and easy. All participants that submit observations will get a certificate of appreciation.
For more information on the event and how to participate, please visit our Outdoor and Environmental Education website.
We invite you to share pictures of the bugs you see on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #WRDSBbugblitz.
